Dr. Elias C. Papadopoulos is the Director of the Spine Department at “HYGEIA” Hospital and an Assistant Professor at the University of Athens.

He graduated with honors from the Medical School of Athens and later specialized in orthopedics at the 1st Orthopedic Clinic of the University of Athens. He also trained in Spine Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in the USA.

He obtained his Orthopedic Surgery specialization and subsequently pursued further expertise in Spine Surgery and Scoliosis at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He worked at the Hospital for Special Surgery and Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York until 2005 when he returned to Greece.

He began volunteering in Ghana, West Africa, and the Philippines, performing surgeries for severe spinal conditions. His experiences from these countries have been presented and published in internationally recognized medical literature, emphasizing techniques for conditions such as early-onset scoliosis and severe kyphosis.

He was awarded the title of “Traveling Fellow” by the Scoliosis Research Society. Alongside two other surgeons and under the mentorship of the distinguished Michael McMaster, he traveled to leading spine surgery centers in the USA (St. Louis, Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas), where he performed surgeries and gave lectures.

 

Academic & Research Contributions

 

As part of his academic career, he has published over 40 articles in prestigious US medical journals such as Spine and the Journal of Spinal Disorders. He has also contributed chapters to books in both English and Greek and has presented his research at major international and national conferences.

He is deeply passionate about research and continues to work with unwavering enthusiasm on various topics, including:

  1. Spinal osteotomies for severe deformities
  2. Artificial discs
  3. Spinal tumors and infections
  4. Osteoporosis and kyphoplasty
  5. Spinal fusion
  6. Scoliosis and kyphosis in both children and adults

He leads research programs that consistently produce publications in international spine conferences.

He became a member of the Education Committee of the Scoliosis Research Society. As a university professor, he trains young doctors in spine surgery. He is an active member of:

Dr. Papadopoulos strongly believes in a modern, team-based approach to disease management to achieve the best possible treatment outcomes.
